Associate Director, Katerina Wong
Katerina Wong is a dancer and choreographer originally from New Jersey and a recent graduate of Princeton University. After moving to Beijing this past September 2010 to fulfill her position as a Princeton-in-Asia Teaching Fellow at China Foreign Affairs University, she met Andrew Delo and was inspired to join the Future Dance Ensemble of Peking University.
At Princeton, she majored in Anthropology with a concentration on East Asian Studies and a minor in dance. She was very active in the dance department studying modern choreography, technique and performance. There she had the opportunity to work with and perform pieces by Mark Morris (Grand Duo, Canonic ¾ Studies), Susan Marshall (Name by Name), Rebecca Lazier (Twelve Women Dancing), Cherylyn Lavagnino (Surrender My Soul to Rest), Twyla Tharp (The Fugue), Ze'eva Cohen, Zvi Gotheiner (Chairs), Christopher Williams (Tir’na Nog) and Camille A. Brown (City of Rain). At Princeton, Katerina was also a choreographer, dancer and Artistic Director of the student-run BodyHype Dance Company and a member of the musical theater company, Triangle.
She has been training in various forms of dance including ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, modern and hip hop for over 19 years. Before Princeton, Katerina worked with the likes of Neil Greenberg, David Dorfman, Suzi Taylor and David Parker at various summer intensives and dance programs and trained year round at the Center for Dance Education in Clark, NJ. There she soloed in several ballet suites including Sleeping Beauty (Lilac Fairy, Blue Birds), the Nutcracker Suite(Sugar Plum Fairy, Dew Drop Fairy, Toy Soldier, Marzipan, Chinese, Arabian, Snow), and Swan Lake (Odette). She has also performed in numerous musicals including Footloose, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Westside Story (Consuelo), 42nd Street (Phyllis) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Alice) and choreographed Alice in Wonderland, Singing in the Rain, Bye Bye Birdie, Anything Goes, Annie Jr., Aladdin, Once Upon a Mattress, Wizard of Oz, Jack and the Beanstalk and the Emperor’s New Clothes for the Performing Arts Studio in Scotch Plains, NJ.
In December 2010, Katerina had the chance to dance with Philein/Ziru Productions’ Zero Hour in Beijing, and will continue dancing with them for the coming season in California.
Katie was honored to help choreograph and assistant direct The Future Dance Ensemble’s spring performance of Circus: Enter the Dark. She also had the opportunity to be the first volunteer on behalf of the Ensemble to begin dance workshops with the Migrant Children’s Foundation in the Spring 2011. She is so proud of all if the dancers’ hard work and commitment and is inspired by Andrew Delo’s vision, passion and determination. She very much looks forward to working with the ensemble again in the future!
